Hyder and the Dease Lake Round Trip
Day 22: July 22, 2017: Dease Lake, BC: 453m/730km
Opa decided not to make breakfast, "I don't want to, the benches are wet." We went back to A&W, instead. We were in for a light and scattered rain all day, great. At least it wouldn't hail or pour.
Smithers > Meziadin Jct-267 km
Meziadin Jct > Hyder-41km
Hyder > Meziadin Jct-41km
Meziadin Jct > Dease Lake-331km
Opa insisted that we stop in Hyder, "You can't say that you've taken a motorcycle to Alaska, without stopping in Hyder!"
We made it to Stewart after passing this huge glacier, Bear Glacier National Park. We stopped in one of the hotel restaurants. Opa had pie and coffee, I had hot cocoa. Opa called everyone to let them know that we were about to go into Hyder.
I was shocked to see that there was only a checkpoint on the Canadian side. We pulled over and took pictures everywhere. Opa just kept laughing and saying, "I can't believe it! I have to tell Hiram and Curt! They have paved the road in Hyder!" We found a little gift shop, found a bumper sticker! We drove around Hyder, looked at the community center, the old campsite with the laundromat and showers. Yes, we even found the famous bus (picture from google images, we didn't stop to get a picture).
We were ready to leave Hyder and make our way back towards Dease Lake. We were beyond ready to throw the towel in by the time we made it to Dease Lake. We spent over 400 miles in cold rain and drizzle. We decided against unpacking our wet gear, setting up in a wet area, and repacking the cold and wet gear in the morning. The hotel couldn't be that bad, right?
$100USD/$130CD! Black mold behind the toilet, dripping toilet, blood droplets splattered on the bathroom wall, and a wad of hair in the bedding. Yikes. At least we wouldn't have to deal with cold and wet gear.
We didn't get to see any bears, as the hotel advertised. However, I got to watch a woman complain to the front desk about the lack of bear sightings. That along with the free and unlimited hot cocoa almost made up for the lousy room.
