An Old Friend in the Yukon Territory
Day 24: July 24, 2017: Quill Creek, YT: 298m/479km
We were on our way to Haines Junction and stopped in Otter Falls for gas and Opa's daily pie. After about 5 minutes of being back on the road to Haines, he says that the bike is showing a flat. As we pull into a gas station in Haines, we start to work on his bike. I load my sidecar with all of his stuff, he jacks the bike up. Opa quickly finds the culprit behind the puncture in his rear tire. He removed the screw, pulled a plug through, pumped air back into the tire, and loaded his gear back up all in about an hour! There were two Harley riders that we had seen in Teslin, they stayed and watched the whole thing. We were finally back on the road, passed Destruction Bay, and started to look for a nearby camp that Opa had stayed at before. The camp that Opa had stayed at before closed years ago. We found a camp a bit further down the road. It will be the last camp before we cross into Alaska.
It turns out that the owner of the Yukon Discovery Campground is the same woman that Opa and his friends met in 2008. She had sold everything in Scotland and moved to the Yukon Territory to open a camp. They talked for a while, she offered us dinner, we took her up on the offer. We set up camp and walked around all of the rotting abandoned equipment left behind during the construction of the Alaskan Highway. Opa would grin and tell stories of learning to drive in some of the older trucks like the ones left in the field. The owner called us to tell us dinner was ready, we had Moussaka and steamed veggies for dinner.
